Anton took me to lunch to Jeju today - a Japanese place where we've never been before. It's a nice place and the food was good, but it's not the reason why I am mentioning the episode.
It was the end of the lunch time, and the part of the restaurant where we were sitting in was empty. Then four asian men sat at the table nearby. I was totally impressed by the size of their rice bowls - each one was as big as a salad bowl! As for the serving rice bowl, filled with heap - I'd rather use the word "basin" for it. The serving spoon was a ladle. Chotto ooki desu!:) All this tableware was different from the standard Japanese restaurant dishes. There was some other food on their table - but I was absolutely impressed with the quantities of rice those guys were consuming. Then I noticed that all those guys were wearing pants with black-and-white print, all different: one had camouflage, another one - some abstract pattern, third one - something floral... but all in black-and-white print.

So, there was a quiet time in the restaurant; then English/Spanish speech of the background noise changed into Japanese, and this bunch of the crazy rice lovers wearing their weird pants... For a moment of two I had this extremely strange feeling, that "I am from a different movie", that it was a sorta matrix malfunction... Chotto kikai desu! 8)

Then a brain troubleshooting obviously took place, and the weird asians finally coincided with "the last lunch call for sushi" that was announced several minutes ago:
Those japanese guys were the restaurant's sushi chiefs, who removed their black uniform jackets and hats, and stepped out from of the sushi bar to have their own lunch. And they used the bowls and cookware from the restaurant kitchen at their table. Whew. The matrix keeps going in the normal regime, after all. What a relief. Still, the amount of rice that those guys had for lunch impressed me greatly, I thought only a sumo wrestlers eat like that!:)))

Thank you!

Hehe, apparently so! Working with food makes guys want to eat... as for me - it's totally vise versa: if I am cooking a big dinner, I can't eat it!:))

When I started reading the events at the restaurant I thought "I bet these guys turned out to be sumo wrestlers."

So I was surprised by the outcome.

I like rice, but I'm not sure I could keep up with these guys. :D

Heh, I didn't think about sumo wrestlers at the time - it was one of those strange moments, when reality somehow changes and doesn't feel real for a second:)
It'd be cool .... though I doubt there are any sumo wrestlers on the Front Range... have to be grateful that at least we have some shamisen players around...:)
